9 Royal Wedding Mess-Ups That You Had No Clue About

For centuries, the Royal Wedding over across the pond in England has been a spectacle of grandeur. I bet if they had social media back in the day, we would have some great #ThrowbackThursdays.

Who knows maybe the royal family would have had their own reality show like The Kardashians, aka the royal family over in the US.

But did you know that some Royal Weddings haven’t gone on without a slip up or two? They kept them secret at the time, but as time has passed, we’ve found out about the following times there was a hitch…at the hitching.

1. Princess Diana had a terrible headache at her ceremony

Somehow Princess Diana held it together at her wedding. It’s safe to say she is one of the most memorable Princesses in our lifetime, and her poise was a huge reason why. The headache came from the Spencer Family Tiara she had been wearing all day.

Her brother, Charles Spencer said:

“In the evening [after the wedding] we all went to a sort of semi-private party. And she was there and she seemed incredibly relaxed and happy and I just remember she had a cracking headache too, because she wasn’t used to wearing a tiara all morning”

2. Prince William tore up the guest list, per The Queen’s request!

William had received his wedding invitation list and it had 777 people on it. It didn’t have one person he or his soon to be wife, Catherine, knew. So he spoke to The Queen and she said tear it up and start from scratch with the friends you want!

3. Diana screwed up Prince Charles name

There’s a lot of nerves going on at the altar, I get it. But when you’re Royal blood, you can’t afford mistakes! If you listen to the following clip, you can hear her say “Philip Charles Arthur George” when it was supposed to be Charles Philip!

4. King George IV got hammered at his wedding

I mean what can you do when it’s an open bar you are paying for! That would be the excuse for a normal person, but King George IV wasn’t normal. I bet the liquor was much stronger back in 1795 too. His groomsmen had to prop him up, Weekend At Bernie’s style, and he even refused to say his vows.

5. Marie Antoinette’s wedding dress didn’t fit and was a mess

Every picture out there depicts Antoinette’s as a work of art but it was far from that. They tried everything to make it fit but in the end they had to cover up the holes with fabric.

6. Kate Middleton’s Ring Almost Didn’t Fit

Prince William chose to not receive a ring at their wedding but Kate Middleton definitely got her bling. She had gotten it sized after she lost a bit of weight and the ring got stuck at the knuckle. Awkward!

7. Queen Elizabeth’s tiara broke the morning of her wedding

Back in 1947 Queen Elizabeth had a bit of a wardrobe malfunction, nothing as bad a Janet Jackson though. They had to get a tiara fixed that was made for Queen Mary back in 1919. The tiara got a police escort to the official royal jeweler!

8. Prince Charles Vows

Back in 1981 when Diana and Charles got married, Charles said “all his goods” instead of “my worldly goods.” I think that’s fine slang, but maybe not when you’re about to be crowned?

9. Alfred the Great learning of his bad fortune…

And finally we have Alfred the Great, and his Great kerfuffle. All the doctors couldn’t figure out what was wrong when he complained of a sharp pain. Historians think he suffered from Crohn’s disease when that wasn’t even a thing that people knew about.
