When Obama first ran for the White House — we first got to meet Sasha.
And after former president Barack Obama won the election, the then 7-year-old Sasha became launched into the limelight.
In a rare sighting, the world was able to watch her grow from a young girl to a teenager.
And while most think they know all there is to know about the former president’s daughter, most couldn’t be farther from the truth.
Let’s talk about Sasha’s real name for starters.
Sasha’s is actually a nickname. Her real name?
Natasha.
News outlets first revealed this in 2016 when it was reported she was using her full name for a summer job at Martha’s Vineyard.
And for a while, it didn’t catch wind. Until Ashley C. Ford shared the news in 2017 via Twitter.
Another interesting fact?
Most don’t know that Sasha almost died when she was a baby.
Former president Barack Obama shared in a campaign video reported by Politico about his experience.
“People ask me what was the hardest time in my life — they ask, well what about during the debt ceiling debate and this and that and the other thing,” he noted.
But nothing compared to what he experienced when his youngest daughter was just an infant.
“Sasha got meningitis when she was 3 months old,” the former president shared. “I still remember going to the hospital together and they had to give her a spinal tap.”
Meningitis is known to be a life-threatening disease.
“Your world narrows to this very small point,” he continued, describing how it felt in the moment. “There’s one thing you care about and you don’t care about anything else.”
Thankfully, Sasha made a full recovery and is alive and well today.
Another known factoid you may not have known about Sasha?
While you may not be able to find Sasha’s social media — it doesn’t mean that she does not use it.
In 2017, Obama was making a speech at a Hillary Clinton rally where he confirmed how Sasha does, in fact, Tweet.
And that’s not all.
In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live! President Obama revealed that Sasha is also on Snapchat.
“So, tell me about Snapchat,” the former President had said.
Sasha then showed her father how it worked and what features it had.
And when she finished, he said it was interesting and then started to talk about the implications of social media with his wife.
Sasha apparently then recorded the entire exchange and then sent it to her friends with the caption:
“This is my dad lecturing us on the meaning of social media.”
Then, she proceeded to take a selfie of her looking very unimpressed.
Another time when the internet broke, you ask?
When it learned how Sasha was not present during her dad’s final farewell address.
Folks were scratching their heads, asking how she could miss such a monumental event.
So where was she exactly?
Just busy studying!
According to Mark Knoller, a CBS News White House Correspondent, he revealed to Twitter — saying:
“Where was Sasha? WH Official says she stayed back in DC tonight because she has an exam at school tomorrow morning.”
Her mother, Michelle Obama, confirmed this in an interview with Jimmy Fallon, saying:
“She had a final. And it’s like, you know the Obamas girl, sorry. Better take your test. You can say goodbye later.”
