Thousands have signed petition to rename street in front of Trump Tower after Obama

A recent petition has been launched by fans of Barack Obama to rename the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets in New York after the former president.

But funny enough, this is the same street that the current president’s iconic building, Trump Tower, resides on.

“We request the stretch of Fifth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets be renamed ‘President Barack H. Obama Avenue,’” the petition states. “Any addresses on that stretch of Fifth Avenue [which includes Trump Tower] should be changed accordingly.”

Over 15,000 people have signed the petition.

The page shared a statement on the page, explaining the reasoning behind the request for a name change:

“The City of Los Angeles recently honored former President Barack Obama by renaming a stretch of the 134 Freeway near Downtown LA in his honor.”

“We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president who saved our nation from the Great Recession, achieved too many other accomplishments to list, and whose two terms in office were completely scandal free.”

And if you can’t read between the lines, the last sentence was most definitely a dig on Trump — whose first two years in office have been riddled with scandals.

It is also no secret that Trump is not a huge fan of Obama.

Prior to Trump being a presidential candidate, he attempted to discredit Obama as well as stir up hatred towards the former president.

Recently, Trump attempted to call out Obama by implying it was hypocritical for him to have a wall around his private property.

“President and Mrs. Obama built/has a ten foot Wall around their D.C. mansion/compound,” he posted to Twitter. “I agree, totally necessary for their safety and security. The U.S. needs the same thing, slightly larger version!”

The above comment was made after Trump accused Obama of knowing about Russian interference in the election, despite Trump denying it ever happened in the first place.

“So President Obama knew about Russia before the Election. Why didn’t he do something about it? Why didn’t he tell our campaign? Because it is all a big hoax, that’s why, and he thought Crooked Hillary was going to win!!!”

As you can imagine, to have the address of Trump’s tower as being on “Barack H Obama Avenue,” would one of the biggest slams yet.

But before you get too excited, in order for the street name change to be approved, the City Council must approve the measure and Mayor Bill de Blasio (a Democrat, mind you) would also need to give final permission.

Name changes happen quite often so “Barack H Obama Avenue,” may come sooner than we expect.

Just last month, the council approved name changes when it was discovered streets were named after the Wu-Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G., folk singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, as well as poet Audre Lorde.
