Blind Golden Retriever gets new best friend who is a “seeing-eye” puppy

Two golden retrievers by the names of Charlie and Maverick are sweeping the internet with their sweet tale (no, not that tail) with 4-month-old Maverick helping a blind Charlie live life to the fullest.

Chelsea and Adam Stipe, their humans, previously lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, but currently reside in Moorseville, North Carolina.

Adam Stipe has had Charlie since he was just a little puppy, according to his wife.

The older dog has quickly adapted to being blind and still loves to play and take long walks.

But this story started back in 2016 when Charlie had to have his left eye removed due to glaucoma.

Just a year later, Charlie began to lose his eyesight and experience pain in his right eye.

Because of this, owners decided to have it removed.

“For us it was a no-brainer, empty our retirement plan to care for this dog because he makes us happy,” shared Chelsea Stipe.

Stipe says she had always wanted to add another pup to their family and getting one during her pregnancy would be the best way to ensure their child had a dog to grow up with.

So on New Year’s Day this year, the family adopted a little pup named Maverick.

And while at first, Charlie was not a fan of Maverick, the blind dog eventually grew to love his new companion.

“They’re both pretty crazy and special. They’re definitely our entertainment,” Chelsea laughed.

As the two dogs became fast friends — Maverick started to notice something off about Charlie.

“When they would play, Maverick would realize that Charlie would lose the toy sometimes, so (Maverick) would pick it up and put it back in front of him to re-engage playtime,” Chelsea said.

The two dogs learned how to support one another, even during walks.

“They almost turn into little sled dogs where they’ll walk together,” Chelsea said.

Chelsea then decided to submit the dogs’ story as well as pictures to WeRateDogs — a social media account with millions of followers across Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

WeRateDogs reached out to Chelsea, sharing how much they adored dogs’ story and would post about Charlie and Maverick.

On March 18th, the post of both Charlie and Maverick garnered hundreds of thousands of likes across the board with many folks commenting how much they loved the two dogs.

“It was crazy, it was not what I was expecting,” Chelsea said.

Only an hour after posting the pictures, WeRateDogs reached out to Chelsea saying how she should create an Instagram account for her two sweet dogs.

After Chelsea created the Charlie and May Instagram, the account gained over 20,000 followers on the first day alone.

“Everything has just been so positive and loving and I’ve even had people reaching out about their dogs who had glaucoma,” Chelsea said.
