Doctors were shocked when upon operating on a woman’s stomach discovered 3.5 pounds of golden metal jewellery, trinkets, money and a watch.
The 22-year-old patient had been complaining of abdominal pain and had been sick after every meal for an entire week before she was admitted to the hospital.
Both sonography as well as x-ray tests revealed metal in her stomach, so surgeons at the the Rampurhat Government Medical College and Hospital in India operated to remove it quickly.
Surgeons removed chains, nose rings, earrings, trinkets, bangles as well as anklets during the 75-minute procedure — also revealing 90 coins and a wristwatch.
The head of the surgery department, Dr. Siddhartha Biswas, led the operation — saying that the woman had ingested gold, copper and brass items.
The woman, who is currently undergoing psychiatric treatment, may have taken items from her brother’s costume jewellery shop.
Her family said:
“We noticed that the ornaments were disappearing. But whenever we questioned her, she started crying and revealed nothing. Despite keeping an eye on her, she somehow managed to swallow all these objects. She was not well for the past two months. Before admitting her at the Rampurhat Government Hospital, we had taken her to various private doctors and she was on medication without any result.”
Dr. Biswas confirmed the patient from Margram in West Bengal, India, is in fact stable and will soon be discharged.
In a similar case that happened last month, surgeons removed 80 objects from a man’s stomach including coins, nail cutters, keys, a knife as well as glass after he came in complaining of a stomach ache as well as chronic sickness.
After giving the 24-year-old man a CT scan and an X-Ray, surgeons in Udaipur, India, at Rabindranath Tagore Hospital carried out the operation.
Dr. D K Sharma, head of surgery at the hospital, said the objects were rusted and must have been inside the man for “some time.”
The specialist said:
“We investigated him by doing an upper endoscopy, CT scan and x-ray of his abdomen and intestinal area, and noticed foreign objects in his abdomen and colon. We surgically opened the stomach and were surprised to see various objects, ranging from coins, chillums [short clay pipes used for smoking marijuana], nail cutters, some glass objects, keys, key rings, a necklace, a hair clip, a knife blade, safety pin [and] a spectacle-neck-chord-strap.”
