If you have ever planked — then you know how painful it is — even when you are in shape.

Dana Glowacka was able to plank for a staggering four hours and 20 minutes, beating the previous Guinness World Record for a female plank by almost an entire hour.

The Canadian yoga instructor revealed that her very first plank was only four minutes long but over the years, she was able to build up her time — claiming second in the 2016 International World Cup Plank Challenge in Beijing (yes, that’s a thing) with a time of two hours and five minutes.

And while most folks would be more than happy with this massive improvement, Dana was determined to do better, doubling this time in the last three years.

She is so committed to her craft that she actually has plank-induced elbow wounds.

She thanked her brother in a post on Instagram who made her a surprise at her record attempt.

“My brother surprised me with a literally 24 hours trip to just support me and push the button of starting and ending line of the new world record set for the Longest Abdominal Plank of 4hrs, 20min. Here he is…my brother, standing strong by my side like an Angel.” the post read.

While the record is yet to be ratified by the Guinness World Records, it is only a matter of time.

The male record for an abdominal plank is almost twice as long as Dana’s.

Mao Weidong set the record back in 2016 with a time of eight hours and one minute.

Planks are one of the most effective exercises out there that you can do but why exactly?

They require a relatively small time investment on your part and give the chance to achieve amazing results in a short amount of time.

While there are few forms of exercises as effective at building your core as planking exercises, planking benefits far more than just your core strength.

And by holding yourself in the position for a planking exercise, you will notice that your biceps, neck as well as shoulder muscles are being tested and this encourages their buildup and development.

If you like to do press ups, developed shoulder muscles will have a big impact on your press up performance.

When you plank — you are holding yourself up through your arms and biceps. So by holding a plank position, your arm muscles are being toned and developed.

Making planking a priority is a fantastic alternative exercise to other forms of bicep developing exercises.

And moving down your midsection, successful plank exercises develop the muscles in your butt!

Muscles that usually are ignored by a lot of exercises.

Just as you develop your biceps and arm muscles, holding the plank position helps develop the muscles in your thighs too.

And the best part of planking? These exercises don’t take much time at all.

And while you don’t need to be planking for four hours….ten minutes max per day will make you feel like a Guinness World Record breaker.
