Barnes and Noble in hot water over “racist and misguided” book covers

Barnes & Noble is under fire for attempting to celebrate Black History Month with what many are saying was a racist and misguided attempt.

Announced at the start of February, the move involved “Diverse Editions” of 12 classic novels, which included “Alice in Wonderland,” “Frankenstein,” and “Moby Dick.”

Each edition was remade with “new covers promoting diversity,” according to Publisher’s Weekly that feature multiple mixed-race couples in several “Romeo & Juliet” versions along with a Black Frankenstein as the cover art.

But artwork quickly made many upset with comments like:

“This is corporate liberalism. The conservative ideal would be for them to promote books written by black authors.”

“Good job you managed to make diversity look racist, a real talent of white America!”

“Imagine doing this with, say, movies. Imagine putting out a movie poster and trailer with an all-black cast but *actually* when you sit down to watch the movie, it’s an all-white cast. And with some racist content thrown in. How many people green-lit this idea?”

“They can make a lot from free public domain books by long-dead authors that they can just publish without paying anyone, which is what all of these are.”

But on Wednesday afternoon, the bookseller released a public statement to Twitter that explained how it would cancel the “Diverse Editions” after reading through the “expressed concerns” of readers.

“The covers are not a substitute for black voices or writers of color, whose work and voices deserve to be heard,” the statement said. “The booksellers who championed this initiative did so convinced it would help drive engagement with these classic titles.”

Russian company pledges to revive your loved ones from the dead but for a hefty cost

A Russian company by the name of KrioRus (located just outside of Moscow) hopes to make the loss of a loved one not as painful.

KrioRus is the very first Russian cryonic project which translates to storing human brains and bodies in freezing, low-temperatures with the hope that someday, they will be able to resurrect the person.

Currently, KrioRus has 71 “patients” — the term the company uses to refer to the brains and cadavers that float in liquid nitrogen.

Both are stored at -320.8 degrees Fahrenheit in tall vats.

For those who are not familiar, cryonics is the idea that keeping all body parts, especially the brain, will allow the person to be revived in full capacity along with the same personality, knowledge and thoughts prior to dying.

The head of the Russian Academy of Science’s Pseudoscience Commission, Evgeny Alexandrov, believes cryonics is “an exclusively commercial undertaking that does not have any scientific basis.”

In both the medical and science communities, it is known for being a falsehood. Alexandrov continues, saying it’s “a fantasy speculating on people’s hopes of resurrection from the dead and dreams of eternal life.”

But for those who put stock in future technology, that dream could someday be a reality. KrioRus alleges that hundreds of potential clients from over 20 countries have signed up for their services.

According to Metro, it costs $36,000 to freeze an entire body and just $15,000 for the brain alone — but only for Russians. Prices are slightly higher for those who are non-Russian.

Woman who claims Trump raped her decades ago demands DNA test

Lawyers for a woman who accuses President Trump for raping her in the 1990s are requesting a DNA sample to determine if his genetic material is on a dress she wore during the encounter.

E. Jean Carroll’s lawyers served notice to a Trump attorney this past Thursday for Trump to submit a sample on March 2 in Washington for “analysis and comparison against unidentified male DNA present on the dress.”

After the president denied her allegation, Carroll filed a defamation suit against Trump in November. Roberta Kaplan, her lawyer, then had the black wool coat-style dress tested.

A lab report with the legal notice reports DNA found on the sleeves was a mix of at least four people, at least one of the male. Multiple other people were tested and eliminated as possible contributors to the mix; their names are redacted.

Last summer, Carroll accused Trump of raping her in a Manhattan luxury department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.

The very next month, Carroll revealed in a New York magazine peice how she met Trump by chance and headed to the lingerie department for Trump to pick out a gift for a woman.

She allegedly joked about trying on a bodysuit in a dressing room which led Trump to reach under her black wool dress, pull down her tights and raped her as she tried to fight him off, eventually escaping.

Woman goes viral in rescue video, addresses trolls who body-shame: “I had to hang on to stay alive”

After footage of her falling through the ice on a lake in Michigan — the woman decided to speak out addressing comments about her weight after going viral.

In a video to Facebook, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office shared the rescue where it has since garnered over 91,000 views.

Korisa Miller was fishing with her friend on the docks at Lake St. Clair, Michigan on Jan. 27 when she slipped and fell into the lake’s freezing waters.

Her friend attempted to pull her out but was not able to do so. Two nearby fishermen heard Miller screams but had trouble rescuing her too.

Officials report that Miller was in the water for 15 minutes and was drifting in and out of consciousness by the time help arrived.

After the footage went viral, Miller identified herself in the comments of the Facebook post when viewers asked how she ended up in the water and why she was dressed without a coat in the winter.

“It took only a few seconds for the ice to give in because as all of you have been saying I am a thick woman. The spot where I fell in the water was 12 feet deep and I had to hang on to stay alive.”

Miller further explained how she had been wearing a coat and a sweater while fishing but the fishermen had to “rip off” her top layers as it was making it difficult for her to breathe.

“When they tried pulling me up, my hoodie and coat was choking me so they had to rip it off of me. I did not go fishing in a tank top,” she commented.

Later, Miller shared with the Detroit Free Press how despite the traumatizing experience, she was unsure why people decided to focus on her weight.

“After going through such a traumatic experience and I almost died, this is what people have to say. I just think these people have no conscience anymore,” she said. “People have no idea that I used to be 400 pounds and now I am the way I am. I want to raise awareness on how dangerous ice fishing can be. I am glad I am alive and share my story,” Miller added.

O’Brien’s video (which is only her third time posting on the platform) has since received over 7 million views along with lots of questions on how exactly the harmonica got stuck.

“After 30 minutes it hurt, but then it was kinda numb,” she revealed to BuzzFeed. “Every time I breathed heavily out of panic, it made a noise.”

And when she informed her mom of what happened — surprisingly, she was not upset but rather “shocked she raised such a weird kid.”

Thankfully, when O’Brien arrived at the hospital, the doctors recommended a dentist who was able to pull the harmonica out with a special tool.

“Let’s not do this again, OK dear?” the dentist allegedly said.

Arnold then revealed how he has worn dreadlocks for years and has always followed the dress code as he kept his hair off his shoulders, above his earlobes and out of his eyes, by tying up his dreadlocks. He then told DeGeneres he was told he was in violation of the dress code after Christmas break.

“Every day I would go to school, I would be in dress code,” he revealed to DeGeneres. “But the thing with them is, if it was let down, I would be out of dress code.”

Ellen then responded with a hefty check of $20,000 to go towards his college fund along with a message for his school’s staff. Watch below!

You won’t believe how grown up Octomom’s eight babies are today

Natalie Suleman, who became known as “Octomom” in the tabloids after her pregnancy with 8 babies, is celebrating her children’s 11th birthday.

Suleman, who previously went by Nadya, shares snippets of her life with 14 kids on Instagram, she does not usually post photos of them all together.

Last year, she revealed to the New York Times how she has to split her children up into groups for various activities in order to spend time with each of them – -even eating in shifts.

And while Suleman faced criticism for her large family, they lead a quiet, normal life. All of the kids are vegan, they do well in school and love to read.

The celebratory post read:

“Happy birthday to my beautiful angels. You are some of the kindest, most compassionate, caring human beings I’ve ever known. Words cannot express how grateful I am to be your mother. You all have blessed my life immensely and I thank God daily for trusting me to care for, shape the lives of, and influence all of you. Recent tragic events of loved ones lost are a powerful reminder of how fragile, precarious, yet precious life is, as tomorrow is never promised. We need to hug our loved ones a little longer and a little tighter while they are here. You are my miracles, my angels, and I will love you with all my heart, forever. Happy 11th birthday Noah, Maliyah, Nariyah, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Jonah, Josiah, and Makai.”

After teen has minor ankle injury, she becomes diagnosed with rare “suicide disease”

A 16-year-old girl along with her family are asking for the public’s help to cover the cost of a miracle treatment that would help the teen live to see another day.

In 2013, Moana Ruhfuss was diagnosed with chronic regional pain syndrome (PRPS) when she was only 11 years old after an ankle injury.

According to the Mayo Clinic, CRPS is a form of chronic pain that usually affects an arm or a leg and typically develops after an injury, a surgery or a stroke or a heart attack,

And while there is no cure, when it comes to treatment, both improvement as well as remission is possible.

The condition is said to be more painful than childbirth and has been dubbed the “suicide disease” due to the high rate of suffers who decide to take their own lives.

If you feel led to give, visit Moana’s GoFundMe here.
