We all know someone that could use this new miracle cure for baldness scientists just found. Some dudes can rock the bald look but many who suffer from it, just want it cured. Also lets be honest, I’m pretty sure nobody has ever been able to rock a toupeé.
Everyone that’s bald would probably admit they would do anything to get a few more hairs on their head but it seems that this cure came about via an accident. It makes sense that it would happen this way, it seems that a lot of these types of drugs happen like this.
Originally this drug, WAY-316606, was made to treat people who suffer from osteoporosis. According to CNBC though, it’s helping baldness even though that wasn’t it’s original intent.
So it seems you won’t have to watch those crappy Bosley commercials anymore!
The drug’s side effects targets a compound that was supposed to treat the osteoporosis. Now if they market this drug for people who suffer from hair loss, there won’t be any side effects (so far).
Dr. Nathan Hawkshaw, who is the leader of the WAY-316606 project had this to say about the drug:
The fact this new agent, which had never even been considered in a hair loss context, promotes human hair growth is exciting because of its translational potential.
It could one day make a real difference to people who suffer from hair loss.
The study was published in the PLOS Biology journal and according to Hawkshaw they tested over 40 patient’s hair follicles. After testing these subjects with the WAY-316606, they showed growth in a matter of six days.
Dr. Hawkshaw went onto say:
“Clearly though, a clinical trial is required next to tell us whether this drug or similar compounds are both effective and safe in hair loss patients.”
If you are just now seeing loss of hair, there’s still time before you might need this miracle drug. Here are a few ways you can keep what you have so far.
1. Grab some Ketoconazole Shampoo
The science behind this shampoo is basically stopping the hormone that shrinks hair follicles. You can get a better version over the counter but you can also find a less potent version in the shampoo aisle.
2. Go and meditate and/or excercise
You’d be surprised how calming yourself down or getting to the gym can help your hair growth, let alone all the other health benefits these can give you.
3. Buy some Minoxidil
Yeah it’s the fancy name for Rogaine. It may not help you gain more hair, but it will help you keep what you still have.
4. You can go the laser route
These are pretty dang expensive but a study that was published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology said that men saw an increase in hair density within 26 weeks.
5. Take Vitamin D!
Go out and get some sun! Or you can take the pill version, which might be a bit safer. You don’t want to reveal your balding spot to the sun just because that is one spot that cancer can pop up.
