Dogs are adorable with their four paws, two eyes and two mouths.
Well, maybe not every dog but this particular dog had an extra mouth of sorts where her one ear should be.
A dog named Toad was given to an animal welfare shelter in Oklahoma when it was discovered she was one unique doggo.
Toad’s owner, Heather Hernandez, said:
“Immediately we recognized that she was very different to most dogs.”
“She was initially showing lots of aggression but once she and I got together, that all disappeared.”
“Upon her initial intake exam at the shelter, our veterinarian originally thought she had extra ears,” she said.
“But once we sedated her for her spay surgery, that’s when we discovered that she actually only has one ear and two mouths.”
The owner added: “We originally thought it had two teeth but we did a dental cleaning on the ear a few weeks ago and discovered it has several. A few of the ear teeth had cracked, which caused some discomfort, but once we removed the broken teeth she was good as new.
“The main teeth we kept since they appear to be attached to the skull. We certainly can’t rule out that the ear mouth might cause further issues in the future but that’s okay, we can just take it one day at a time.”
“It has what looks like lips in which the opening of the lips are the part that actively salivates.”
Toad’s ear mouth does not have a jaw so it actually does not open or close.
She does not hear, see or smell very well as everything in her head is aligned.
Heather discovered Toad when he was handed over at her animal charity, Mutt Misfits — which deals with deformed as well as disabled dogs.
“The charity was formed because in shelter settings there aren’t many organizations that specialize in the special needs pups,” she said. “Most rescue groups take in highly adoptable pups from shelters and re-home them.”
“We focus on animals with major medical issues and saving the sick and injured pets. We like to help people to understand that animals don’t have to be perfect to make perfect pets.”
Mutt Misfits is a nonprofit animal rescue in Oklahoma that founded to help animals with treatable as well as manageable illness or injuries to end euthanasia, according to their Facebook page.
“Mutt Misfits is a rare and beautiful rescue that takes on dogs that most people wouldn’t take a second look at; parvo cases, broken legs, severe demodex, broken jaws, and hospice cases. This list is just a brief example of the types of cases I’ve seen Mutt Misfits bring in and barely scratches the surface of all that they do.” one commenter shared.
“The love that both the Mutt Misfits founders and fosters have for the animals they bring in shows through vividly with every progress update. Mutt Misfits has a wonderful way of helping you see past a dog’s imperfections and see all the heart and personality of every individual they bring in.”
